This is a drawing of a woman. It was purchased at an estate sale in 1990 from a historic home in the Henry Ford District of Dearborn, MI USA. Email with questions or for additional detailed photos.
This work has not been authenticated, nor do I have knowlege of its origin. I purchased it at an estate sale in the Historic District of Henry Ford homes (Dearborn, MI USA) from a stately residence. I was taken by the subject and not until years later did I notice the signature. There is not a qualified appraiser in the greater Metro Detroit area, but I have contacted the Antiques Roadshow to see how to participate in their expert analysis--no dates nearby at this time. Part of the reason for ebay listing is to expose this piece to those individuals with fine arts expertise.

The painting is oil on canvas.
28 1/2 x 22 1/8 inches (73 x 56 cms)
It bears the signature "Goya" and date "1785" in lower left-hand corner.
It is black-on-black with delicate laces and ribbons. The woman is looking knowingly at the artist.
The painting is lined and is in good condition and is framed in a black and gold museum quality frame.
The painting bears a striking resemblance to the 1805 charcoal drawing (254K) of Goya's wife, Josepha Bayeu, which has been established by the art world.
It is the belief of the sellers that the painting is the same lady. (Josepha Bayeu who was 38 years old in 1785 and 58 years old when the black chalk drawing was completed.

Nobody is trying to sell a portrait painted by Goya on eBay, before it has been shown to Sotheby's or Christie's. And in fact, the seller did just that - of course, and the result was disappointing:
"This is not a genuine Goya - no way."
